Social Security Payment Schedule 2026: When You Get Paid
Social Security pays monthly on a Wednesday set by your date of birth. Here is the 2026 schedule, the exceptions for SSI and pre-1997 beneficiaries, and how to find your exact dates.
Social Security retirement and disability benefits are paid once a month, on a Wednesday set by your date of birth. Here is how the 2026 schedule works and how to find your exact dates.
The rule: your birthday sets your payment day
Most beneficiaries are paid on a Wednesday based on the day of the month they were born:
- Born 1st–10th → the second Wednesday of each month
- Born 11th–20th → the third Wednesday
- Born 21st–31st → the fourth Wednesday
Your payment falls in the same Wednesday slot every month, all year.
Find your exact 2026 dates
Rather than counting Wednesdays, use our COLA tracker and payment-date tool — enter the day you were born and it lists your next six payment dates instantly (and shows the current 2.8% COLA).
Exceptions to the Wednesday rule
A few groups are paid on a different schedule:
- Started benefits before May 1997 — paid on the 3rd of the month, regardless of birthday.
- Also receive SSI — your Social Security is paid on the 3rd, and your SSI on the 1st.
- SSI only — paid on the 1st. If the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, it is paid the prior business day.
If a payment is late
With direct deposit, money usually arrives on the scheduled day. The Social Security Administration suggests waiting three mailing days before reporting a missing payment. Setting up direct deposit and a my Social Security account is the easiest way to track your payments.
